Service Description:

What is a NetID?

All students, faculty, staff, and authorized guests at the University of Tennessee are provided with a Network Identifier/NetID (username) and password when they join the university. A NetID permits secure access to a variety of applications and services, including: UT Email, Microsoft Office 365, MyUT, wireless access, Banner, Blackboard, and UT Recruitment.

Finding a NETID

If you do not know a NetID, you can find it by searching for the person using the Search UTHSC webpage.  The search response will show the person’s name and NetID, under People.

Some students, faculty, and staff request privacy in the directory and will be unlisted.  If you are unlisted, please contact our Helpdesk for further assistance.

Sponsoring a NETID

Although NetIDs for students and employees are created automatically, and are added to the online directory through regularly scheduled updates, there may be a time lag. NetIDs can be sponsored by a supervisor, business manager or department head to handle special circumstances, such as adding a new employee who needs services before or on their start date, providing access to a contractor or other person not paid through the University payroll system, or adding an email address for a campus organization.  Sponsor Request/Renewal for a Network Identifier can be accessed through iLogin.

Sponsoring a NetID does require a social security number to avoid assigning more than one NetID to an individual.

The following are reasons to sponsor a NetID:

  • Visiting or Adjunct Faculty
  • New Employee (prior to start date)
  • Person working for or at UT, but not paid by UT
  • Retired Faculty or Staff performing work associated with UTHSC (requires department approval)
  • Other

Reasons for request:  Typically, an individual is sponsored because they need access to email or another application to provide a service to UTHSC.

Sponsor’s responsibilities:  Sponsors will be notified annually when it is time to renew their sponsorship of an individual.  In the event that an individual no longer needs their sponsored NetID, Sponsors must notify ITS by emailing FootPrints@uthsc.edu.  This may be due to completion of an assignment, termination of service, death, etc.

Sponsored account holder:  Individuals sponsored must complete UTHSC Information Security training annually in order to retain their NetID privileges.  Failure to complete training will result in the NetID and provisioned services being turned off.

Departmental NetIDs:  Campus departments, student and professional organizations, or other units can request a departmental email account. To request a departmental email address, complete the Departmental NetID Request form and email to FootPrints@uthsc.edu.

Request Service:

Faculty, staff and students on all UT campuses are automatically provided with a NetID when they are made active in the IRIS Payroll system, admitted to the University or registered for classes.

Incoming employees may need their NetIDs before they are active in IRIS. Departments may request a NetID using the NetID Online Request mechanism by logging into the UTHSC iLogin interface available at http://uthsc.edu/ilogin/.  This form may also be used to request accounts for contractors, researchers, visiting scholars and other authorized “guests”.

Departmental accounts are available by filling out the “Request Departmental Account” form.
