The UT Vault (also known as UT Secure Courier) is a secure file transfer application that allows users to easily send large files, including executables, quickly and securely. Files are uploaded and downloaded via SSL encrypted HTTP and stored in an encrypted data store. Using the UT Vault is as easy as sending an email with an attachment, and it works equally well from both a PC and a Mac. The UT Vault is intended for file transfer and not for permanent file storage. The service is available to all university faculty, staff, and students. Non-UT users can use it both to send and receive files to/from UT-affiliated individuals.
- UT personnel can login to the UT Vault with their UT email address and NetID password.
- Non-UT users must first complete the UT Vault External User Registration by entering a valid email address.
When should the UT Vault be used?
To send sensitive information securely
You should use UT Vault when you have the need to send files securely. All confidential and/or classified information should be sent securely. This kind of information includes, but is not limited to:
- HIPAA-protected patient data
- FERPA-protected student information
- Credit card numbers
- Social Security Numbers
- Other sensitive, restricted, or private information.

To send large files or a large number of files
Use UT Vault to send large files or a large number of files. Our UTHSC email system has a limit imposed on the size of any files you attach to email messages. When the files you are attempting to send exceeds this attachment limit, you can use UT Vault to overcome this limitation.
Students, faculty and staff at all of our University of Tennessee system institutions are automatically registered for UT Vault when services are provisioned. No sign-up or registration is necessary. In addition, access is not limited to UT users, however, external users must register. Messages can be sent to and received from external email accounts, making this an effective tool for collaboration and for communicating with incoming students and employees.
Non-UT users must first complete an External User Registration by entering a valid email address at this Vault registration page.
